April Jazz Café 2025
Celebrating National Jazz Appreciation Month

20th year logo 1_edited_edited.png

Jazz Appreciation Month (fondly known as "JAM") was created Initiated by the Smithsonian Institute and established by an act of Congress in order to recognize and celebrate the

extraordinary heritage and history of jazz for the entire month of April. JAM is intended to stimulate and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz - to study the music, attend concerts, listen to jazz on radio and recordings, read books about jazz, and more.

Here at Jazz Arts Project, we celebrate jazz year-round with world-class performances and transformative music education programs for area youth.  And each April we try to do some special events including these café nights and our annual gala performance and fundraiser on International Jazz Day April 30th.

Behn Gellice

Behn enjoys a distinguished reputation as a virtuosic vibraphonist and prolific composer. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Milt Jackson and Gary Burton, Gillece has dedicated himself to pushing the boundaries of artistry.

20 years ago as a newly formed organization we produced a quant summer series that we called Summer Jazz Café.  We transformed an intimate theater space into a cozy candle lit performance space hired the best professional musicians we could find and hoped for the best. Not knowing if anyone would attend we did our best to make the music, the atmosphere and even the delectable treats offered for sale to be elegant, affordable, and inviting. Over the ensuing years we experienced sold out audiences time and time again. People like quality music and ambiance it turns out. Who knew?

With these café nights in April, we are beginning to fulfill some patrons requests that we continue these events into the rest of the year. This April, thanks to the generosity of some dear friends and supporters we are testing the waters.  As we celebrate the official Jazz Appreciation Month, lets see if it is possible to sustain in a new venue and a new time frame… enjoy!

And dont miss....
